Of all the luxury items in my collection, I think the piece that I get the most questions about is the Louis Vuitton 6 Ring key holder.

For such a simple small leather good (SLG), the Louis Vuitton 6 ring key holder is quite the versatile item, so it doesn’t surprise me at all that it has a lot of interest. But with so many key holders on the market, you may be asking yourself if this one in particular is actually worth it?

Whether or not an item is worth it to you or not is very personal. But what I can do is provide you with an in-depth pro’s and con’s list which can hopefully help you decided for yourself if this item is one that you need in your collection!

Before we jump into the pros and cons of the Louis Vuitton 6 ring Key holder, I thought that it would be a good idea to go over some of the specs and history of this cult favorite piece.

The 6 ring key holder from Louis Vuitton dates back to at least the mid 90’s (but probably later than that!) and is often hailed as an introductory piece to luxury fashion goods.

With a low price point compared to other items form the brand and it’s functional design, the 6 ring key holder is a good fit for most anyone.

Historically, the 6 ring key holder has come in a multitude of colors and material options, with the current choices as of this publication being Damier Ebene and monogram canvas, black Empreinte leather as well as black Epi leather.

The key holder is a very convenient size as well, coming in at 3.9 L x 2.8 H x 0.4 W inches.

All the 6 ring key holders feature a snap closure in the front, grained calf skinned leather lining in the interrior as well as a slip pocking in the center fold that can be used to hold a few cards or cash.

While the price for the 6 key ring holder has been creeping up over the years, the current price for a Monogram canvas key ring holder is currently at $325.00 USD.

The Pros of the 6 Ring Key Holder

With everyone seemingly in love with the Louis Vuitton 6 Ring Key Holder, of course it has a lot of pros to consider! The first being its utility.

This piece allows for easy organization inside of your bag. You might not think it much, but having all of your keys and important cards all in one protective space makes finding what you need that much easier.

The slip pocket in the back is truly my favorite, as it makes this piece something that is easy to reach for when you’re looking to pack light or want to just carry one SLG with you.

There have been plenty of times where I just carry my 6 ring key holder because all I actually needed in that moment were my keys and a couple of cards.

And because this piece has a lot of functionality to it, you’re likely to get your money’s worth out of it. Unlike other luxury items that you may only use a few times a year, the 6 Ring Key holder is an item that you’ll likely use daily.

Wear and tear on this item tends to be pretty good as well. I have used mine very frequently over the past 4 years and it hardly shows any signs or wear. Even on the corners and folds, the glazing is intact and none of the print on the canvas has rubbed off. And while I don’t have the leather version of this item, I can only imagine with how robust their epi and empreinte leathers are, that its just as resilient, if not more more!

Lastly, while I find this item to be overpriced for what it is (we will talk about this in the section below), because of it’s popularity and ever rising cost, the 6 Ring Key Holder has a great resell value. Years ago,I had bought my first 6 ring key holder used in very poor condition for around $75.00USD. Because the canvas wasn’t cracked, I was able to get it repaired some at Louis Vuittion. Then, when I was ready to upgrade, I was able to sell it in ok condition for $225. If you buy your’s new, you may be able to recoup 50-75% of your cost if you chose to resell, which isn’t too bad at all.

Cons for the 6 Ring Key Holder

There are a few cons to consider for the 6 Ring Key Holder, thought I find that most of the cons that I have are conditional.

The first major con that I have for the 6 Ring Key Holder is that it’s just flat out expensive. Yes, it’s an entry level piece from Louis Vuitton, but you can easily buy 4-5 really nice key holders from competing contemporary brands for the same price. So if you financial considerations are high on your list, you may want to check out options from Kate Spade, Coach or Fossil which all offer beautiful leather options.

From time to time, Louis Vuitton has also offered colorful versions of the 6 Ring Key Holder. These are so beautiful–as I of course have mine in pink! But they are a bit more upkeep.

The interior lining for example can get dirty over time. I combat this by using a wet wipe every few months to just clean the dirt and grim away. admittedly, you should probably be doing this with any key holder, but the dirt and grim definatly show more on the colored version.

Some of the color versions also come with a leather button for the snap closure. While cute, these leather buttons can get dirty as well as wear over time. This hasn’t happened to me yet in over 4 years, but I have seen pictures of some of the buttons completely worn down. I know that this would be a major issue for many of you. You can get the button fixed for a fee or replaced all together with a brass version. But again, that’s a lot of upkeep for such an expensive item.

Who Is the Louis Vuitton 5 Ring Key Holder For?

Clearly, this is an item that I love and enjoy using even with the few issues that can present itself. But I don’t think that this is an item that makes sense for everyone.

If you tend to carry leather handbags with other leather SLG that need protection, a key holder is probably going to be a lot of use to you. Alternatively, if you’re looking for just one SLG that you can use to hold a few cards and your keys, the 6 Ring Key Holder is also probably a good option for you. You’ll have to determine for yourself if the higher price tag for a luxury name brand is worth it to you, but the functionality of the piece will make sense for you life.

Lastly, this of course makes a great gift! Regardless of gender, most people will would love and be thankful to receive this item in a little orange box! It’s a beautiful, luxurious sentimental gift that will have your special someone thinking of you almost daily. And while it is expensive, for a special occasion $325.00USD is possible to swing for most people.

If you live a keyless life however (or only have 1 or 2), then this is an item that you can probably skip. In this case, I would probably look at the Rosalie Coin Purse instead.

Final Thoughts

The 6 Ring Key Holder from Louis Vuitton Is a wonderful introductary piece for your luxury collection. I find that it has a lot of utility for my day to day life and is well constructed to handle a lot of wear. At $325.00USD, the 6 Ring Key Holder is over priced for what it is, but if you’re a lux lover like myself, you can probably justify the cost, knowing that you will get a lot of use out of it.

This item isn’t for everyone though. It makes little sense for the growing population of people who just don’t use keys anymore. Also, if you opt for a color version, you’ll have to combat visible dirt and wear, which I know will frustrate a lot people.

Ultimately thought, I love that I have this piece in my collection and it works out well for me. Do you have the Louis Vuitton 6 Ring Key holder? Let me know what you think about this piece below!
