It’s been some time since I purchased a ‘new to me’ Chanel leather good, so for Valentine’s Day/ Lunar New Year this year, I got a little treat.

The O Case (or Classic Zipped Pouch as they are now calling it) isn’t something new to my collection at all.

There are few things that I’m willing to buy multiple of: the Chanel O case is one of them.

It’s a versatile clutch that is great for travel but also for daily errands, appointments, date nights— it’s truly an organizer that can be adapted to your needs.

I have already given the medium large O Case a stamp of approval on this blog, so for today I wanted to give a bit of a different update.

As we all know, most of Chanel prices have sky rocketed over the past few years.

But are these prices worth it? What new value, if any are we getting from these price increases, or are we now forced to pay an even larger premiums for legacy luxury?

As we enter a period in the pre-loved market where prices seem to stay stagnate but products aren’t moving as fast, I feel like these are the questions many of us should be asking ourselves when it comes to making these larger purchases.

So lets dive in.

I love using the Chanel O Case for travel because it’s dependable and convenient, just like our blog sponsor Expedia.com

All About This Particular O Case vs the New Chanel Classic Zipped Pouch

I purchased this Classic Zipped Pouch from Fashionphile for $765.00 USD.

This particular clutch is from the 2016 cruise collection (which dropped around the time of my wedding!) which featured lots of vibrant reds and some fun block-y features.

What really drew me into this Case was the handle that is featured on the front side.

It very versatile; allowing you to easily hold the clutch in many different ways.

I was also drawn in by how functional the zipper is.

Unlike other Classic Zipped Pouches from Chanel, the zipper extends around the side giving you wider access to the clutches interior.

As a lover of this style of clutch, the wider opening is something I wish that they would have kept around as it makes the bag more functional, especially if you want to use it to hold an iPad mini, or loading it up with a small wallet and necessities for a night out.

The New Chanel Zipped Pouch

While Chanel may have switched up the name and added a larger size over the years, honestly, not much as changed with this design.

As mentioned before, while my clutch is unique with its handle, the majority of the O Cases ultimately carry the same over all design now as they did then.

To be fair, there is only so many changes that you can make to a pouch before it stops being a pouch. And over designing is a thing.

But since 2020 I have personally noticed that Chanel leather quality has been inconsistent, with some of it being amazing and some of it being subpar.

I have also noticed that the finishing quality, such as stitching and hardware aren’t always up to standards. For me this is a problem when you are paying a mortgage bill for 1 luxury item.

I blame some of the quality issues with supply chains getting jammed up during the pandemic that just never fully recovered.

But I also think some of this is rushed production as many of these luxury houses work on a time table that is closer to fast fashion as they push for more profits.

Price Comparison

What I paid

As mentioned before, I paid $765.00 USD for this clutch.

This is after the Fashionphile ‘Last Call’ discount of 40% off the original list price; meaning the original list price for this particular clutch was $1,275.00USD.

While this clutch does have a unique design that Chanel hasn’t really used since, this feels very steep for a used item.

Cost of New Chanel Zipped Pouch

When compared with purchasing a new Zipped Pouch from Chanel, which currently goes for $1,425.00USD, you would only be saving $150.00 if you were to purchase it at Fashionphile’s full price.

While every cent counts in my book, honestly that isn’t much of a savings at this price point.

So are these Zipped Pouches really holding value?

Value Breakdown

No…and Yes (ish).

To see if the bag gained any monetary value, we have to see what it was originally purchased for.

I was able to find out that this particular clutch retailed for $800.00USD back in 2016.

10 years later, this case would now retail for nearly 60% more.

If this is a piece you plan to buy and hold and you would like it new, you’ll save money buying it now verses waiting.

But when it comes to value, I think it’s best to look at pre-loved listing and selling prices because it shows you what people are actually willing to pay for second hand.

When looking up pre-loved Chanel O cases, most of them are retailing second hand starting anywhere from $900.00USD-$1350.00USD; with recently sold O cases selling on average for $969.19USD.

A lot of these O Cases were on the older side as well so likely sold for a profit.

As you can see though, my O Case sold for considerably less at $765.00USD. So why was that?

Why I Got My Case For Less?

One of the things that I notice was the red O Cases sold for considerably less than the other cases– including multi-colored and clutch styles with writing on it.

The average for the red colored O Cases alone was $776.45USD which is almost spot on for what I bought mine for at fashionphile.

As I have mentioned in this post here, just buying a style that sells well isn’t enough if you’re hoping to sell your item for a profit down the line. You have to consider other factors such as leather finish, hardware section and color as well.

It appears that for Chanel, red is a shade that performs about 40% worse on the secondary market than any other color.

What’s interesting is that this trend appears to be consistent amongst all of the Classic Chanel leather goods, with red shades loosing value over time.

My thoughts here are, red is a bold statement color which is in stark contrast to the quiet minimalist styling cycle that we are currently in.

Red is also a luxury color in that it doesn’t match everything. If you’re working on building a practical wardrobe where everything flows together, red isn’t going to be a shade you’re likely to choose.

With more shoppers willing to take less fashion risk, bolder colors just aren’t going to sell well on the secondary

What Does This Mean For Pre-Loved Luxury in 2026?

After comparing all these prices (I looked at 50 recently sold clutches), I have a few thoughts on luxury moving forward.

The handbag market, like any other economical market is cyclical with ebbs and flows. This means that trends tend to swing around.

Right now in the mists of a looming recession, flashy luxury isn’t on the top of most peoples minds.

For those still buying, partial items that work will with existing closets are more favored than loud experimental pieces.

If you are looking to sell a colorful piece expect it to take longer, with certain colors selling for significantly less than others.

Another thing that came to mind was the Lipstick index

A woman with long black hair smiles over her shoulder while holding a red handbag and wearing a light-colored dress, standing on green grass in an outdoor setting.

In a previous blog, I talked about what the lipstick index is so you can read more about it in there.

With that said, the O Case over all is selling better and closer to retail value than I would gave expect.

My guess is that this is because it’s a ‘low cost’ Chanel handbag.

Similar to why the WOC was so popular for being a Classic Flap alternative for those who couldn’t or wouldn’t pay the $5,000.00USD at the time for a medium flap; the O Case could possibly fill a the same entry level role for many.

Why pay nearly $3,500.00USD for a WOC when you could pay $1,425.00USD (or less) for a similar Classic style?

Lastly, for those who are building a curated closet tailored to their likes and not trends, this period is probably a good time to buy color.

I want to caution here– DON’T GO BUYING JUST BECAUSE. Especially with larger finical systems in flux at the moment, this is a period where I think everyone should be very intentional with their spending and with their future money goal.

And as much as I love them, handbag will not be the best financial strategy for most.

But If you have already made plans for a particular bag purchase and you were wanting it in an off trend color, such as red, green, yellow or orange for Chanel, over the next year or so would be a great time to save on these colors.

Final Thought

To more concisely answer my original questions; No, we are not getting more value from Chanel. They have raised the price of the O Case by nearly 60% without making much change to it at all.

But the right style will retain its value over time with the right market conditions. If you buy a new Classic O Case now in black, you’ll likely be able to sell it close to retail price in 10 years from now and turn a profit.

As it has always been with Chanel leather goods, you are paying for the name and status more so than quality, innovation or craftsmanship.

That said, I walked away with a great deal. While I recognize that this is still an expensive clutch, I ultimately got 60% off retail for an item that’s in wonderful condition that fills a gap in my wardrobe.

I’m so excited to style this for Valentine’s Day and beyond and glad I waited until this particular time to buy it.
